The JIPEncoder takes the JPlayout output, performs video and audio compression, multiplexes in MPEG Transport Stream or fragmented MP4 and streams it out via selected network interface and IP protocol. The IP streaming process can be controled separately from the main playout in manual mode.

My employer is going to be remodeling a TV studio, and we are presently in planning stages.
Essentially we are looking for the best device to use to play out clips, like B-Roll, and pre packaged segments during live productions. In our present studio we use a TriCaster so everything is all contained with the two DDR's.We also are looking at replay systems as well, and I'm not well versed on the matter but they can play back any sort of clip that we load on to them right? What I have in mind:1.) CasparCG (el cheapo, we use it occasionally in our present setup, kinda clunky)2.) Abekas Mira/Tria3.) Grass Valley K2 Summit4.) Avid AirspeedWe are still in the very very early stages, haven't even decided on a switcher yet, but we will most likely be going MVS-3000 or Carbonite.
Presently the studio has a Ross Crossover and we are ditching it for something that has two M/E's. We would like to be able to trigger playback like we can with the trickster DDR's, thats one reason we dislike the CasparCG machine we have.Just looking for some feedback.thanks!. I'm in a live sports environment and we have a Mira. It was originally purchased in 2009 for replay but now happily serves as my server for recording games/playing clips/commercials/whatever.I've been very happy with it. It's a 'no nonsense' kind of box and support is very easy to get a hold of.My biggest question at this point is what's going to happen now that Ross bought Abekas.
Hopefully they tighten up the integration between the Carbonite and Mira. I'm going to have to arrange a demo at some point, but I'm looking at picking up a second Mira to replace our 3Play for our E3 productions. As for switchers, the Carbonite is a very good choice. It's a lot easier to interface with external gear (like servers) and it comes with a more 'professional' feature set (like saving and recalling memories) as well. For Carbonite, I think the 2 M/E is probably the sweet spot. (And don't forget about the 4 mini M/E's either.)Sony MVS-3000 seems to be discontinued though. If you need other options, maybe see what For.A and Panasonic have to offer. We have EVS XT3s, Miras, Trias, and 3Plays where I work.
I don't have any experience with the K2 or Airspeed systems. The EVS gear is great, but very very expensive and almost need to go to their school to get it all working together and operate it. The 3Play is garbage.
The best bang for the buck IMO is the Mira/Tria, especially if you are looking to trigger from a switcher or other automation. I have Tria units tied to Ross Visions & Carbonites, Sony MVS 8000s, and Grass Kayennes across my truck fleet and they work great. They support a number of protocols over serial and IP. The Miras are easy to use, easy to learn and very stable. They also have lots of great features if you are using them in a studio environment. They have a lot of transcode features built into the box, and have recently opened up the network clip share feature with the newest software release. Their tech support is FANTASTIC and FREE and they release new features in software updates every few months.Since we have 8 or so units, I have been in contact with our Ross rep as recently as this week and they are absolutely not going to kill off the Abekas products, but are going to beef up that line since they suck so bad at making their own servers. As for switchers, Carbonite is also an excellent choice.
We have several generations in our flypacks and trucks as well as some For.A 390 switchers. The 390s are much cheaper and seem to be pretty equivalent to the carbonite on paper, but the interface is not fast or smooth, it lacks some pretty basic features, doesn't integrate with much else, and the tech support is non-existent. I too am looking into media servers and just had a demo from Grass Valley on their K2 Summit. We are replacing a K2 Classic and what upset me the most is how little they have really changed the product since the classic. Especially since the cost for a product that will likely be obsolete in four years due to the speed of this industry.
One company I am looking into is Softron(Softron.tv) because it had the ability to utilize an external GPI device to control the software and it will be able to natively playback ProRes 422 files which is the codec for my teams mezzanine files so we no longer have to transcode. We plan to have a demo from Softron soon and if it doesn't turn out to be as good as we hoped then we will probably be going with either the K2 Summit or one of the three from Ross; Mira, Tria, BlackStorm, but that depends on what switcher we go with. To be fair, the Classic was ahead of its time.Don't go with BlackStorm for sure. It hasn't really been announced, but development on that ceased a year or two ago and they've pretty much decided to discontinue that product line. That's part of why they decided to buy Abekas (who makes the Mira and Tria) if I had to guess.Like you mentioned, my recommendation for OP would be to consider your switcher and server together since you are purchasing both new. Both GV and Ross offer tight integration between their respective switcher and server lines.
Sorry, not hating on the Classic, it was and still is a pretty great media server. It think that's part of the problem though. The classic was great and the newest ones are just as good but the cost is still up there. You would think the equipment would get cheaper as time progresses if they aren't going to make any radical changes like recording and playing back multiple streams at the same time, ideally 4 in 4 out setup as a base model.Really appreciate the info on the BlackStorm though. We haven't had any demos from Ross so it is good to know that it's probably not even worth the time looking into that one:).Mira and Tria are definitely at the top of my list now. You can do a lot of that with the Summit.
If you get ChannelFlex you could do 4 in 2 out on one server (Basically 1A 1B, 2A 2B as record, 3 and 4 as playback - keep in mind there's only one set of controls for both A and B side, so you have to start and stop the record on 1A and 1B at the same time etc.)They have made a lot of changes but at its core it's still a video server. Lots of additional advanced features like proxy editing off the server, better integration, better serviceability, bigger storage, RAID10. K2 Central is a pretty huge change that makes creating a larger video server network easier than ever before.
Those changes may or may not matter for you in your application though.Cost is definitely up there and if you don't need the features or workflow, there are more cost effective options. Overall I think the K2 is still a good value and if you are getting into the point where workflows are important take a look at it. For example the K2 can play/record content from baseband SDI, -or- import/export to/from USB drives, -or- FTP in or out, -or- you can select a folder (either on the K2 which you share out to the network or I think even on another device like a NAS) where you simply drag and drop files like a server share and the K2 will automatically run a service to import them into the server. So you have 4 simultaneous methods of getting content in/out of the K2, and you can be using all 4 at the same time with no disruption, while on-air. But if you don't need features like that, by all means look at the other options.I'd say the big advantage of the Avid Airspeed is if you have an Avid ISIS system.
Most places that use Airspeed also have an Isis that they tie into. It can be a really tight end-to-end workflow and I've heard good things about it.When I bought video servers recently it came down to K2 vs. Abekas, and I ended up going with the K2 because I liked the interface better and the abilities for transferring content seemed more robust and easier to tweak as my workflows evolved. Plus, I have a GV switcher, so I can fully control the K2's over the network. But I could very easily see someone going with the Mira instead if their circumstances are a bit different, ESPECIALLY if Ross ties it in tightly with their switchers. Mira seems like a pretty good product. It's definitely fully featured.
Pretty much every time I asked 'so can it do xyz' the answer was yes. And they are more cost effective. Sorry, it's becoming clear to me that I am complaining about the K2 because it doesn't do the one feature I want, which is pretty crapy on my part:/.Getting in the right mindset, it is clear they have changed a lot. They implemented a lot of workflows, added channel flex and provide a lot of expand ability options and future proofing with 4K support. The one thing I really wanted to see, yet neither Ross nor GV offer, is the ability to playback ProRes content without transcoding. A lot of the use case for my company will be a need to record, edit on a true NLE with a five camera multicam sequence and then deliver it for playback all within a minimum 10 minute window. We looked at Edius for GV but with all the added cost it just upsets me that neither GV or Ross license the ProRes codec from Apple. To me that would be a selling point and my company can't be the only one who uses ProRes.What are your thoughts on this?.
Some red flags for me:. Copyright on the website is 2009. Another product by this company (and linked via a SVG article) has an expired domain. No tweets in over 2 years. Website looks like it was made with an off the shelf template. I've never even heard of this product before. The user manual appears to be 18 pages long.
Screenshots of the product in the user manual don't have a whole lot of polish.Given that OP is moving from a Tricaster to a Carbonite, and has a budget for a proper video server, this seems like a wholly inappropriate choice to me.
